Allegri Ensemble brings 2022 to a close with a delightful program of carols and motets for the Christmas season in All Saints Church, on Wednesday December 21.
Sing Noël offers a selection of Christmas music ranging in style and mood from the exquisitely spare and tender The Lamb (Tavener) to the exuberant rejoicing of Sametz's Gaudete.
Five motets in the luminous style of the Renaissance also feature in our program: Canite tuba (Palestrina), O magnum mysterium (Victoria), O sapientia (Ramsey), O beatum et sacrosanctum diem (Philips) and Parson’s serene Ave Maria. These are interspersed with carols from the English tradition: The blessed son of God (Vaughan Williams), All this time (Walton), Blessed be that maid Mary (arr. Willcocks), Out of your sleep (Bennett), There is no rose (Lane), Jesus Christ the apple tree (Poston) and Bob Chilcott's The shepherd's carol, described by John Rutter as "the most beautiful modern carol there is". Our concert concludes with the much-loved Once in royal David's city.
We are delighted to welcome acclaimed Hobart organist Ben Mackey, as guest artist.
